Language and culture are very closely related. As a representational form of language, proverbs have various matters and quite a lot of them are related to sexism. This thesis is a tentative endeavor to make a systematic description and comparison of the sexism contained in proverbs in Korean and Chinese. The author compares similar and different sexist phenomena reflected in proverbs of Korean and Chinese, and account for them from the cultural and social factors.Five parts are included in this thesis.Chapter One is an introduction which focuses on the objective, range of this study and the literature review.Chapter Two devoted to define proverbs and describe trait of them in China and Korea.Chapter Three is concerned with social and cultural backdrop related to women both in Korea and China to explore the root of sexism.Chapter Four is the core part. Here sexism in proverbs is analyzed from two aspects:the perspective of women and female status in family. The perspective of women is divided into following four aspects:accidental, low-grade, aesthetic, implemental. And basing on female status in family the proverbs can be divided into three aspects:daughter, daughter-in-law and wife. Then sorted proverbs are compared to find the resemblance and difference between Korean and Chinese.Chapter Five is the conclusion of the thesis. It carries on the summary, points out the value and insufficiency of the thesis.
