Analysis Of The Linguistic Style Of Pai Hsien-yung's Novels

Mr. Pai Hsien-yung has unquestionable status in the world of Chinese literature. Based on the theoretical contributions by our predecessors, this paper describes and analyses the linguistic style of Pai's novels, mainly following the principles of linguistic style studies. Pai's novels emphasize the multiple angles of description based on his abundant vocabulary and the exquisiteness of linguistic expressions. With abundant use of reiteration, his sentences and phrases hook up tightly and present the beauty of coherence. The linguistic style is on the whole abundant and meticulous.The key-words of Pai's linguistic style are "abundance" and "reiteration":First, the "colorful" expressions-his masterly use of descriptive phrases for colors-are many and rich; second, the mixture of dialects gives different local colors to the characters in his novels; third, the massive classical references combined with modern Chinese language enables his novels to present the elegant and dignified tastes; fourth, his novels have a large number of reiteration, in terms of both wording and expressions.
