The relationship between nihility thought, nihility spirit and Mao Dun's novels, especially his early ones (i.e. from "Erosion" to "Midnight") haven't received enough attention from academic circles. Through close reading Mao Dun's novels and collating the research history and present status of this academic project, this paper proposes that nihility thought, nihility spirit have great value and significance in Mao Dun's novels, especially his early ones. In a sense, nihility thought, nihility spirit played an important role in inducing and supporting Mao Dun to show his artistic creativity and create his own novel art world. Through close reading, reviewing and collating Mao Dun's novel creation, this paper proposes that nihility thought, nihility spirit pervaded through the creation course from ebullition to decline and directly determined the artistic features of Mao Dun's novels.Chapter One mainly researches and analyzes the"Erosion"trilogy and its value and significance in Mao Dun's literary career. From the standpoint of originology and artistic psychology, this chapter discusses his internal suffering and depression soul in his transition process from a revolutionary to a writer, and discusses his confusion of life and psychiatric disorders which arose from his internal contradictions, and discusses how did his decadent spirit which arose from the failure of the Great Revolution aspired his literary talent, and discusses how did he reconstruct"those things of revolutionary"by literary form, and discusses how did he realize self-saving and soul relaxation by literary creation. The failure of the Great Revolution, the destruction of political ideal, the debacle of rational will, the publicizing of nihility spirit and the creation of"Erosion" trilogy not only made Mao dun's life change, but also coruscated an original artistic charm because of the strong stimulation through nihility thought and nihility spirit.Chapter Two focuses on research and analysis of Mao Dun's novel creation which is written when he stayed in Japan. At this time Mao Dun had gradually walked out from the shadow of political failure. In internal aspect, the power of his rational consciousness recovered gradually; in external aspect, the Left-wing critics represented by Qian Xingtun excoriated "Erosion" Trilogy "gray" and" decadence".These all prompted Mao Dun to re-design and planning his own road of the Literature. In the "Wild Rose", He tried to imply political proposition and release political stagnation by love story, but he couldn't sort out the tangle of the rational and emotional. In his work presented a shadow cross the sun and the art zone. Nihility thought gradually hid, and rational will increasingly became powerful. Mao Dun's present creation using rationality to adjust the artistic talent is the "Rainbow", which lacked of coordination. "Rainbow" also has a dual nature of restore history and art fiction like revolution and love. In this period Mao Dun's thought and mind is very messy. Both emotional impulses and rational control, positive beliefs and the indulgence of nothingness are coexist. "Wild Rose" and "Rainbow" is a project of the unspeakable and complex creation psychology.Chapter Three mainly analyzes "Midnight" and the subsequent novels. "Midnight" fully demonstrated that Mao Dun's rational consciousness had been completely restored, nihility thought and nihility spirit had been unable to occupy the dominant position. However, the complexity of this works is that on one hand it had strong attempt to rational design and impulse to explain the social politics, on the other hand those profound experience of his inner exhibited from time to time, showing the romantic and decadent art appeal. Success or failure of this work is largely determined by contend of rational consciousness and nihility spirit. The so-called lacking of aesthetics, theme first, senior social documents, is his strong rational attempt to conduct social analysis. But the unique artistic charm of the novel shows that Mao Dun's emotional experience is full of art penetration. Overall, during the spiritual experience of Mao Dun's creation, "Midnight" indicates that his rational will totally rose, and also implies that he gradually lost nihility spirit. After "Midnight", the artistic charm brought by nihility spirit also presented in "Erosion ". Altogether, nihility thought and nihility spirit had a significant impact on the artistry of Mao Dun's novel. The creation course from "Erosion" to "Midnight "is also the course that nihility thought and nihility spirit went from ebullition to dormancy. Nihility thought and nihility spirit brought decadent and romantic art character to Mao Dun's novel, and inspired his artistic originality, meanwhile, rational consciousness and political attempt brought an masterwork in structure and length. However, the entanglement of nihility and art, rationality and sensibility, literature and politics is a provoking and profound literary proposition given by Mao Dun's novels.
