The relationship between nihility thought, nihility spirit and Mao Dun's novels, especially his early ones (i.e. from "Erosion" to "Midnight") haven't received enough attention from academic circles. Through close reading Mao Dun's novels and collating the research history and present status of this academic project, this paper proposes that nihility thought, nihility spirit have great value and significance in Mao Dun's novels, especially his early ones. In a sense, nihility thought, nihility spirit played an important role in inducing and supporting Mao Dun to show his artistic creativity and create his own novel art world. Through close reading, reviewing and collating Mao Dun's novel creation, this paper proposes that nihility thought, nihility spirit pervaded through the creation course from ebullition to decline and directly determined the artistic features of Mao Dun's novels.Chapter One
