E-C Translation Of The Centurion Principles Under The Guidance Of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory

As the core of Nida's translation theory, the theory of "functional equivalence" is one of the Western translation theories that has been first-introduced and most-studied in China. The theory pays more attention to the readers who have been neglected for so long, breaking the static view of our traditional translation studies on the assessment of renderings, having an invaluable role in guiding English-Chinese and Chinese-English translation practices. Taking E-C translation of The Centurion Principles:Battlefield Lessons for Frontline Leaders—a creative non-fiction of the New York Times bestselling author Jeff O'Leary—as an example, as one of the co-translators of the book, this author will combine the functional equivalence theory with non-fiction literature translation from four perspectives:reconstructing formal structures, translating idioms, making implicit information explicit and translating figurative expressions, in order to prove that functional equivalence theory is of great value in guiding E-C translation practice, especially E-C translation of creative non-fiction.This thesis consists of five chapters in all:Chapter one explains the purpose and organization of the research paper. Chapter two focuses on the background knowledge of The Centurion Principles and its translation, with the summary, authorship, literary genre and translation of the book presented one by one, thus paving the way for the study of the translated text later. The third chapter provides a complete description of Nida's functional equivalence theory—after giving a brief introduction to Nida himself, the author continues with a panoramic overview of the functional equivalence theory, including tracing the history of "translation equivalence" and a description of the development, scientific basis and values of Nida's functional equivalence theory. In the fourth chapter, the author expatiates on how the theory is applied to E-C translation of The Centurion Principles, especially from the four perspectives mentioned above (reconstructing formal structures, translating idioms, making implicit information explicit and translating figurative expressions). The fifth chapter is a summary of the whole paper, at the end of which the author points out that there is still much room for studies of E-C translation of The Centurion Principles, and that efforts can be made in a more detailed quantitative research on this translation in the future.
