Translator's Subjectivity Seen From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

As tourism is thriving in China, hundreds of thousands of foreign tourists pour in China every year, eager to know about Chinese culture. Tour guides, the bridge for the communication between China and western world, are indispensable for serving the western tourists and promoting the Chinese culture. And the English tour commentary on which the tour guide mainly rely plays a very important role in tour guide. However, due to the differences in history, geography, social conventions, religious beliefs and values, the Chinese to English translation of tour guide commentary turns out to be a hard task. And the translators are also confronted with the problem of which translating principles they should abide by. Under such circumstances, this article will attempt to explore the strategies of C-E translation of tour guide commentary under the guideline of Skopostheorie of Functionalist School. Firstly, it will introduce the theoretical framework of Skopostheorie, including its development, basic conception and significance; then it will focus on the translator's subjectivity, with its definition and features included. It will also analyze the characteristics of tourism translation in many aspects. In the next part, with the help of many vivid examples, it's proved feasible to use the Skopos theory to guide the C-E translation of tour guide commentary. In the last part, the author puts forward some strategies in guiding the C-E translation of tour guide commentary from the perspective of Skopos theory.This article demonstrates that C-E translation of tour guide commentary is an interpersonal intercultural activity with certain purpose. The Skopos theory is applicable in the C-E translation of tour guide commentary. The translating strategies are determined by its purpose.
