With the continuous widening process in cultural exchanges between China and the West, a large number of English films are introduced into China, which, on one hand meet the demand of domestic film market, and on the other hand, boost the process of cultural collision and integration. Among those introduced or imported films, English animated films attract more and more youngsters and even adults by their excellent stories and themes, bold design of characters and realistic computer animation. In order to bridge language and culture gap, the E-C translation of animated film subtitles has become a common need in the market. Therefore, it has great practical significance to study the specific E-C translation of animated film subtitles with a scientific translation theory.Under the guidance of Skopostheorie, this paper aims to study the E-C translation methods of animated film subtitles. The core concept of Skopostheorie is "the three principles of Skopostheorie", including ;’skopos rule", "coherence rule and fidelity rule" and "loyalty principle". Skopos rule reads as follows:translation should meet the communication need of target readers in their language and culture background. Coherence rule and fidelity rule focus on intratextual coherence and intertextual coherence between target text and source text. Loyalty principle emphasizes that translator acts as a responsible mediator in the cooperation developing between the client, the target audience and the source-text author. At the same time, this paper will analyze the E-C translation purposes of animated film subtitles, which are, to entertain audience, to attract audience’s attention and to reflect characters’ personalities. First, this paper considers the English animated film subtitle humorous and enjoyable, so the translator should mainly apply catchwords, replace ST (Source Text) with familiar words, and use four-character expressions to fulfill communicative goals and intra-and inter-textual coherence. Secondly, because the target audience can be easily distracted, translators should eliminate unnecessary information and obscure words to avoid excessive amount of information in target text. Finally, translators apply figures of speech, like metaphor and simile, onomatopoetic word and reduplication to reflect character’s personality set by the source-text author.Based on the integrated study of the translation theory and practice, this paper can provide some reference for related translation practice of the E-C translation of animated film subtitles. Hopefully, it also can be helpful to improve its translation quality in the future.
