Abstract Looking upon four kinds of fundamental verb-complement structure in The Outlaws in the Marsh as study objects, the thesis analyze their displaying forms and used conditions, and make a comparison of them with contemporary Chinese in an attempt to describe their features in the certain modem Chinese period (form the end of Yuan Dynasty to the beginning of Ming Dynasty) and find out the principles of their developing. The contents of this thesis are arranged as follows: introduction; descriptive complement structure; directional complement structure; potential complement structure; resultative complement structure; conclusion. In the introduction, the origin of the thesis and the version on which the thesis depends are explained. In the second part, the thesis takes an analysis of the descriptive complement structure in such three perspectives of language as syntax, semantics and pragmatics, with the result that it seems very close to the utilization in contemporary Chinese, but there are still some differences between them. In the third part, all kinds of conditions and grammatical meanings of directional complement structure are stated, apart from that, the author will try to show that there still exists some faults in modem Chinese such as the ii w ambiguity of space definitions on the basis of analyzing the characters of the directional verbs which act as complements .In the fourth part, two categories of potential complement structure are discussed in terms of Chinese history and the author concludes that the evolution of potential complement structure is inclined to neatness and symmetry. In the fifth part, the author approaches three categories of resultative complement structure and demonstrates the developing states of their own, addition to, the author takes a semantic analysis. In the conclusion, the situations of four kinds of verb-complement structure are summed up, and the author shows that their evolving tendency is in accordance with the requirements of the language development.
