Modernity Of Wang Guo-wei's Literature And Art Theory

During the transitional period of modem society of China, Wang Guo-wei's theory of literature and art has manifested modern characteristic clearly.. But for bias and history, the importance of Wang's theory haven't been understood deeply.. This article intend to clarify the modernity' tation, explain the modernity of Wang's theory and discuss the influence that his theory has brought.The thesis includes four part: introduction, the two modernity of Wang'theory, the reason of the two modernity and the influence of wang's theory.The introduction put emphasis on clearing the tation of modernity. Moderntiy refers to the state or quality of being modern. Confirming or negating the Value of enlightening represents two modernity, enlightening modernity and aesthetic modernity. In the same way, the theory of literature and art also has two modernity.The enlightening modernity of Wang's theory reflects three sides: the theory of literature nature, the opinion of creation and critic of literature, conscious course opinion, and so on. Wang formed pure and simple literature opinion, regarded human being as the nature, emphasized true description of people's feeling, laid stress on the importance of creative subject, etc. Wang's aesthetic modernity showed four characteristic; attached importance to perceptual knowledge, had a profound respect for tragedy, regarded art as religion, looked on playing games as the origion of literature, etc..There are three reasons for the two modernity of Wang's theory. Firstly, Wang had deep feeling for the country and society, he wanted to utilize the literature and art to educate people. Secondly, natural pessimistic disposition made him want to escape from the world, he regarded literature and art as religion. Thirdly, he recepted the influence of Kant and Schopenhauer, Kant insisted on enlightening, Schopenhauer advocated perception and pessimism.The influence of Wang's theory, on the whole, has three phase, that is, opening consciousness, freedom consciousness and progressive consciousness.
