Lin Yutang was a significant and prolific translator in Chinese literary history. Currently there is still much room left in the research on Lin's translating activities and his translations. Based on previous studies, the thesis examines Lin's translating activities and translations so as to add some bricks into the building of the study of his translation.Based on Lefevere's Manipulation School theory, this thesis aims at exploring the various factors that have manipulated Lin Yutang's translation selection. By taking a systematic look into his translations, prefaces or postscripts, letters, and writings related to his translations, the thesis analyzes how the two elements, namely ideology and patronage have affected the selection of Lin Yutang's translation. Moreover, through a contrastive study of translation of culture-loaded words selected from Lin Yutang's Chinese-English Dictionary of Modern Usage, A Chinese-English Dictionary and A Chinese-English Dictionary (Revised Edition), the thesis attempts to help understand why Lin Yutang has been credited as translator of culture.
