Based on Halliday and Hasan's cohesion theory as well as the present situation and problems in the teaching of college English reading in China, Combining these problems with the development of reading theories, the paper attempts to show the importance of cohesion in college English reading, and searches for the discourse analysis model, from which Chinese college students can benefit and with which they can improve their English learning.Discourse analysis has developed rapidly since the 1950s. There has been a shift from the study of language system toward the study of language in use. Recently, a number of scholars and teachers have been engaged in the study of discourse analysis in . English language teaching and learning. Cohesion, a significant part of discourse analysis, which deals with units above the sentence level, has aroused the common interest in modern linguistics. And Cohesion in English by Halliday and Hasan in 1976 is the first choice of cohesion. They systematically illustrated the basic concept of cohesion and cohesive devices in English, which are classified into two kinds: grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.
