In the late Ming Dynasty, the ethos of pursuing individuality prevailed between the literators. They disdained those already existed traditional moral and Confucian authorities. When the Confucian which has dominated China over one thousand years seemed to be at stake, the change from Ming Dynasty to Qing Dynasty halted this literary and idealistic revolution. The literators who experienced the change of the dynasty began self-reflection, seeking for their orientation in the new dynasty. The new governor of China induced and pressed the society continuously by means of both favor and force. With the efforts of both the upper class and lower class, the literature that has "digressed" in the late Ming Dynasty came back to the "right path" of traditional moral. Wang Wan, who came from Suzhou appeared as elegant and traditional in the literary world of Qing Dynasty. His proses and those of Wei Xi's, Hou Fangyu's were called "Three Masters". His poems and those of Wang Shizhen's were called "Wang Wang". As the great literary master of early Qing Dynasty, Wang Wan tried hard to get rid of the shortcomings of the late Ming Dynasty, in order to re-establish the legitimacy of poems and proses, he did his best. As to ancient prose, he canonized the prose of Tang and Song Dynasty, this indicated the begin of Tong Cheng School; As to the poems, he learnt Tang poems at first, then Song poems, because of his special style, he became the forerunner of "Natural" poem style of QianLong epoch. However, since he experienced several promotions and relegations in his official career, his literary style changed from traditional to elegant deviously but wonderfully. This article will review Wang Wan's achievements on prose and poems during the special historic period-early Qing Dynasty, hope this could be the cut-in point of further research into the literature of early Qing Dynasty.
