Audio-visual teaching has always been a very important and effective teaching method in second language teaching classrooms. In the area of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, however, despite the research of over 20 years, it hasn't done much whether in the diffusion of audio-visual teaching or in the design of audio-visual materials. This thesis gives the Chinese language learners and teachers a survey on the needs and the use of audio-visual teaching and its materials in TCSL, hoping to find out the attitudes to this subject and a direction of the future research.This thesis is divided into three main parts. The first part is to ask questions, including the Introduction and Chapters I and II. In this part, the paper sets out the close relations between audio-visual teaching and audio-visual materials, and gives a clear definition to audio-visual materials. Then the paper discusses the advantages of audio-visual teaching, and inspects its development and use in both English and Chinese language teaching. It finds out that the audio-visual teaching has not been largely promoted in TCSL, while its materials are also much less used than that of similar English textbooks.The second part is the analysis of issues, including chapters III and IV. According to previous problems found, the paper designs questionnaires for learners and teachers respectively on the demand for and the use of audio-visual teaching and its materials in TCSL. The results show that, although actual applications are not good enough, audio-visual teaching and its materials in TCSL is still welcomed by Chinese language learners and teachers.The third part is to solve problems, mainly including the fifth chapter. According to the results and analysis before, the paper proposes some recommendations for the research of audio-visual teaching and the design of its materials in TCSL. It is hoped that these recommendations will do some practical help for the future research.
