This paper discusses the strategies of E-C news transediting. Based on theexamples, the author analyzes and finds out the usage and service condition of eachstrategy, which may help translators' work of news transediting.News translation has been widely used by the press, and news transediting is animportant method in news translation. Although more and more translators andjournalists pay attention to news transediting, it still needs to be studied further. Afterstudying both the Chinese and foreign scholars' research on news transediting, theauthor has fixed the study emphasis of this paper. Then the "gatekeeping" theory inthe mass communication studies has been introduced to point out that translators arenot the only gatekeepers in news translation, and many other factors can alsoinfluence news transediting, such as organizational policy, social obligation, newsvalue, target readers and personal preferences. By observing all the news samples, the author studies them from three parts, the headline, the lead and the body, andanalyzes each part's transediting strategies. Furthermore, according to the translators'transediting sequences, the author does both macroanalyses and microanalyses to thenews samples. From all the analyses, seven transediting strategies have been summedup: deletion, addition, substitution, combination, moving up, segmentation andsummarizing. In the analyses, the author finds a kind of over-gatekeeping operationcalled "falsification" which should be avoided. The author believes that transediting is very useful and adopted rather commonlyin E-C news translation. If translators can master and use it correctly, it would bevery helpful in news translation practices.
