Transediting,a term that accounts the relation between translation and editing, has been widely employed in the author's internship task at Shenzhen Daily, the only daily English newspaper in Southern China.Transediting inevitably involves meaning shifts between the contexts(e.g.from the context of local news being produced for Shenzhen locals to the context of reception by the foreign readers of Shenzhen Daily in this study). The data for analysis consists of 38 transedited news articles published at Shenzhen Daily and their Chinese news reports.Based on a comparative analysis of the Chinese news reports published in a number of Shenzhen-based newspapers and their three English version, namely the first draft, the revised draft, and the published version,it is found that news values differ in different target readerships.By categorizing the news values of the 38 transedited news articles, the study investigates how news values are achieved in transediting local news by means of recontextualization, namely resituating the context through the discourse.Several transediting strategies are generalized in reproducing the TTs,including addition, deletion, restructuring, particularization and generalization. The study discovers that recontextualization has been deployed in transediting the headline, the lead, and the body in an effort to meet the news values perceived by the TT readers, which mainly includes relevance, the power elite, entertainment, and surprise as defined by Harcup & O'neill(2001).
