A large number of business-management readings are translated from English into Chinese every year. Those readings are typically composed of many business-management essays of different lengths to present the writer's viewpoints. The availability of such a broad range of language materials provides us with rich resources for linguistic research. If we want to better understand the business-management essays, it is essential to gain insights into the writers'intention of organizing different materials and message.Thematic progression (TP) pattern is a very useful text analysis tool to locate the linkage structures within a stretch of clauses. This paper first gives the definition of Theme and Rheme and then outlines ten possible TP patterns as well as their functions. To probe into the whole-text organizing and linking mechanism, the definition of a text and a descriptive analysis of the shared features of business-management essay texts are proposed. Next, the Situation–Problem–Response–Evaluation (SPRE) model propounded by Michael Hoey is also borrowed, because this model can contribute a lot to the thorough understanding of writers'intention of information planning and organization of the macro-structure of the text. This paper next applies two linguistic tools of TP patterns and SPRE model to the analysis of 24 sample business-management texts written by some leading authorities in this field to investigate the shared principles and textual features of business-management essay texts in natural contexts. On the basis of the analysis, the most frequently used TP patterns in business-management essays and the reasons beneath are proposed. Furthermore, the frequency of different SPRE models and their entities are spotted. The final section of the thesis is concerned with what new findings and conclusions can be applied to the future analysis and understanding when encountering similar texts.
