| This thesis reports on the translation of the ninth chapter from the management book Organizations and Management in Cross-cultural Context. The book was co-authored by Zeynep Aycan,Professor at KOC University,Rabindra N.Kanungo,Professor at McGill University, and Manuel Mendon?a,Associate Professor at McGill University. The excerpt elaborates on the human resources management practices in the cross-cultural context, covering the employee selection, performance appraisal, job analysis, compensation and benefit, and the management of expatriates. With the acceleration of the economic globalization and the arrival of knowledge-driven economy ages, the human resource management in the cross-cultural context has gradually become the key to enhancing the core competitiveness of multinational corporations.Since Chinese enterprises have not sufficient experience in internalization, the cross-cultural management of human resources starts relatively late in our country and has not been fully developed. The translation of the source text, therefore, can shed insightful light on the crosscultural management of human resources in Chinese enterprises, and help them to reduce conflicts in transnational business.Besides, the translation of the source text can make the teachers and students of domestic universities in the field of management access to the advanced managerial thoughts of foreign countries and scientific approaches to management studies.Owing to its business genre, the source text is featured by rigorous wording and formal style.According to Peter Newmark’s classification of texts, the source text belongs to informative text.He also distinguishes semantic translation from communicative translation and argues that literary texts are often semantic translation-oriented while informative texts are communicative translation-oriented.Accordingly,the translation report focuses on the lexical choice, the handling of complex sentences, and the textual cohesion in the translation from the perspective of communicative translation theory. The thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter One is a brief introduction of the translation project.Chapter Two presents the preparations prior to the translation task.Chapter Three is a description of the translation process.Chapter Four shows some typical cases to analyze the questions the translator has encountered during translation.Chapter Five describes the quality control of the translation. The last chapter is the conclusion,in which implications and limitations of the probject are presented. In this translation report, the author studies the instructive significance of Newmark’s communicative translation strategy on the translation of business text from English into Chinese. The author also puts forwards some suggestions on the translation of business text for the later translators. |
