Adaptation In News Translation

News translation is not the production of one text equivalent to another text, but rather a complex process of rewriting; it projects the underlying value systems into its representation of the source text.The process of news translating is determined by the intended function, that is, the target text still serving as news for the target readers and manipulated by ideology in the target culture, therefore adaptation is widely used and even preferred in most cases.The study of adaptation encourages the theorist to look beyond purely linguistic issues and helps shed light on the role of the translator as mediator, as a creative participant in a process of verbal communication. Relevance, rather than accuracy, becomes the key word, and .this entails a careful analysis of three major concepts in translation theory: meaning, purpose (or function, or skopos) and intention. Only by treating adaptation as a legitimate strategy can we begin to understand the motivation for using it and to appreciate the relationship between it and other forms of conventional translation.This paper attempts to construct a theoretical framework for adaptation in the news field in the light of two related theories—Functionalist/Skopos Theory and Translation as a Form of Rewriting.
