| So far, comparatively few research results have been directed to news translation in China, but there is a large quantity of foreign news, especially English news, to be translated into Chinese everyday. Reference News, whose main work is adapting (translating and editing) articles from foreign media, has become a daily newspaper enjoying the largest circulation in China. Therefore it is of great significance to undertake research into English-Chinese news adaptation.Based on Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory, the thesis mainly investigates articles from Reference News and their source texts aiming at discussing the influence of ideology on the adaptation of English-Chinese news of different themes. The research findings show that the selecting of source news for adaptation and the adaptation strategy in news headline and news content (including words, sentences and paragraphs) are influenced by the mainstream ideology of China, and that the choice of the source text is affected by the China’s political factors, social concepts, sponsors of newspapers, editorial policy of newspaper office and reader factors. The findings also show that there are five types of strategies, such as "To add a main headline", "To add subheading" in adapting headlines, and that the strategies for content adaptation are "To delete original language sentences", "To bowdlerize words of source language", and so forth. This thesis not only concludes that the adaptation of English news into Chinese is governed by the mainstream ideology of the target language country, China, but some adaptation strategies have been figured out from the cases given. Hence, the present research is endowed with a practical value. |
