Application Of Functionalist Approach In Adaptation Of News On Governmental Website

The report discusses the functionalist approach to adaptation of news fromgovernment website. The functionalist theory stresses on the purpose of thetranslation and the communicative function of the target text, which decidestranslation methods and strategies. News translation focuses on the acceptability oftarget text (TT) and the effective communication in the target language environment.Therefore, adaptation is exceptionally suitable to the news translation. Compared withthe traditional translation theory that stresses on faithfulness to the original text,adaptation highlights the needs of intended readers. By means of addition, deletion,restructuring and rewriting, it aims to produce a readable target text and realize thepurpose of effective communication.The report consists of five parts. The first part is the task description, introducingthe background of the project and analyzing the characteristics of the source text. Thesecond part is translation process, elaborating on translation preparations, translationschedule, translation quality control and translation tools. The third part is about thetheoretical basis and major translation strategies employed in the process. The fourthpart is the case analyses. The author analyzes the characteristics of news and discussesthe adoption of adaptation with illustrative examples from the perspective of skopostheory. The fifth part presents the major findings and shortcomings.
