Social Problem-Solving And The Forecast For Suicide Risk Of College Students

Social problem solving is the cognitive-behavioral process by which a person attempts to discover effective solutions to stressful problems encountered during the course of everyday living. There has a significant link between social problem solving deficits and maladjustment, and Problem-solving appraisal is an important predicting variable in hopelessness,depression and suicide ideation. Social problem solving is a new research area in our country, also an ignored aspect in the study of mechanism for suicide behavior happening. Based on foreign studies, this research discusses the characteristics of social problem-solving in Chinese college students and their relationship with forecasting factors of suicide risk, and provides theory basis and experience support for suicide prevention and intervene of college students.College students took part in this research as participants, with the method of questionnaire investigation, this research preliminarily discussed the connection of social problem solving and the forecasting factors of suicide risk of college students by the Social Problem-solving Inventory, the college students' life stress checklist, Self-Rating Depression Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale. The main conclusions are as following:(1) College students have some suicide risk, and have different degree detection rates on the predicting factors of suicide ideation, depression and hopelessness. The three forecasting factors have no significant difference on the main demology characteristics.(2) The ability of social problem solving of college students have remarkable difference on genders, male have higher scores than female on rational problem solving (RPS) and impulsivity/carelessness style (ICS), whereas female have lower scores on every dimensions. The college students of higher life stress may weaken in the ability of solving problem, and the typical characters of solving problem are escape, impulsivity and carelessness.(3) There are significant relation among social problem solving, life stress and the predicting factors of suicide ideation.(4) Social problem solving is an important variable of predicting hopelessness, depression and suicide ideation. The lower social problem solving is, the higher the risk of suicide is.(5) life stress is a significant positively predictor to the three forecasting factors of suicide risk.(6) The moderating effect of social problem solving does not exist, but social problem solving mediate the relationship between life stress and depression and hopelessness, the main mediation effect of social problem solving on the relationship between life stress, depression and hopelessness is caused by NPO and AS. Social problem solving does not mediate or moderate the influence of life stress on suicide ideation.
