Chinese-English Translation Of Introductions To Scenic Spots: A Cooperative Principle Based Study

With the rapid development of its tourism, China will receive more and more foreign tourists. As the principal media through which foreigners can learn about Chinese culture, tourism translation plays a significant role in the development of Chinese tourism. It is getting more and more attention in the academic field, studied in various approaches, in particular pragmatics. However, as a most important concept of pragmatics, Grice's Cooperative Principle (hereinafter CP) has not been adopted sufficiently in tourism translation. This thesis is to analyze Chinese-English translation of introduction to scenic spots (hereinafter C-E translation of ISS) and put forward suggestions based on CP. The thesis is composed of four chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the importance of C-E translation of ISS and the significance of studying C-E translation of ISS based on CP.The second chapter gives the delimitation of the topic about this thesis and the focus of this chapter is put on functions of C-E translation of ISS which is informative and appellative. To achieve its functions, the author argues that CP should be applied to C-E translation of ISS to achieve pragmatic equivalence among the target tourists.Chapter 3 offers a detailed discussion of CP.The fourth chapter is the central part of the whole thesis. In this chapter, based on many data of English and Chinese texts of ISS, the author proves the feasibility of CP in C-E translation of ISS, analyzes the problems existing in present English translation of ISS, and suggests appropriate translation strategies based on CP.
