Suicide Ideation And Its Risk Factors Among The Elderly In Yuanjiang City, Hunan

Objectives: To understand the incidence and risk factors for suicide ideation among the elderly in yuanjiang city, Hunan, to explore how the risk factors, such as social support, life events, social relationship, depression, hopelessness and loneliness, result in suicide ideation, and to provide a scientific basis for suicide prevention among the elderly in rural areas.Methods: Using random cluster sampling method, 912 subjects from nine villages of Yuanjiang City were investigated with Screening Scale of Suicide Ideation. Subjiects from nine villages of three towns in Yuanjiang City, Human were investigate with Screening Scale of suicide of Suicide Ideation. A total of 150 positive reponders and 150 negative responders were estimated with characteristics of social demography, Beck Scale of Suicide Ideation (SSI), Lawton and Brody Instrument Activities of Daily Living Scale, Scale of Life events, Duke Social Support Index, Social relationship, UCLA Loneliness Scale, The Geriatric Depression Scale, Beck Scale of Hopelessness and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-â…£Axisâ… Disorders.Results: 16.4% (95%CI:14.3%-19.1%) of 912 samples (150/912) had suicide ideation during face-to-face interview. Prevalence of suicide ideation is 4.82% (44/150,95%CI:7.99%-14.17%) for male, Prevalence of suicide ideation is 11.62% (106/150,95%CI:17.09%-24.07%) for female. 7.3% of 150 samples (11/150) with suicide ideation had a resolved suicide plan. And 58% of 150 samples (87/150) had a more than middle-degree intense level of suicide ideation. Prevalence of lifetime suicide ideation is 25% and prevalence of suicide ideation is 19.9% for past one year among elderly in rural area of yuanjiang city. Prevalence of suicide ideation for female is higher than the male. Multiple logistic regression analysis shows recent negative life events, poor neighbor relationship, depression and hopelessness are top risk factors of suicide ideation.Conclusions: Prevalence of suicide ideation increases with age among the elderly in Yuanjiang City. The major negative life events related with suicide ideation among the elderly in Yuanjiang City are loss of child, incurable disease or severe disease, live alone, poor economic status, hospitalization and loss of spouse~ Recent negative life events, poor neighbor relationship, depression and hopelessness are top risk factors of suicide ideation among the elderly in Yuanjiang City.
