Because of the complex combination of Chinese predicate and complement, and the various syntactic units as English complement, it is difficult to give systematic contrast to the two kinds of"complement". Most of the related research we can saw mainly describe the differences between Chinese and English complement, or just analyze one part of it from the view of teaching or translation. So there are less people give overall and detailed contrastive analysis to the two kinds of complement, not to remain their common points.Based on a lot of examples, this dissertation contrasts the continuity of syntactic construction and semantic direction between Chinese and English complement. While at the same time, it pays much attention to the"same semantic direction"in the"different syntactic construction". Then according to examples and their translation, we conclude the ways how to translate Chinese complement into English, English complement into Chinese, and analyze the reason why some English complement are omitted in Chinese. By the above research, we hope this dissertation can give some reference to both linguistic and translation theory and their application. There are four chapters in this dissertation:Chapter one addresses the existing status quo of contrast between Chinese and English complement; introduces the brief content, scope, general aims, writing skills and expected contributions of the dissertation.Chapter two contrasts and analyzes syntactic construction and semantic direction between Chinese and English complement. This contrastive analysis can be used as linguistic background of the next chapter. Considered the convenience of the contrast, we just discussed the semantic directions referring to the subject or object.Chapter three concludes the ways how to express Chinese complement in English and how to translate English complement into Chinese; evaluates their commons and differences as well as the reasons why some English complements are omitted in Chinese.Chapter four is the sum-up of the dissertation, which includes the conclusion of the whole paper and the expected research of this topic.
