The translated international news, as an essential means of mass communication, plays a very important role in bridging the social and cultural gap between countries. Its objectivity and impartiality decide how we perceive the world we are living in to a great extent. However, the fact that though the translated international news claims to be the reproduction of the original news, its form and substance have gone through editing in the translating process. So in this paper, the writer would like to borrow the composite word 'transediting' coined by Karen Stetting in 1989 to indicate this complicated translation activity and aim to pose then answer the following questions: first, how could we perceive the translated international news? Second, is it a mere 'translation' of the original text or it is a manipulated 'end product' of news institution? And the last but not least, is transediting still translation? In light of the functional approach to translation studies, the writer would do comprehensive and detailed case studies to analyze the transediting process of the international news. The editing strategies, including deletion summarization and reorganization, and their expected functions, the deep causes would be explored. The writer would try to exemplify that the translation activity does not exist in a vacuum. It is communicative behaviour for a certain skopos it is intended for. The interlingual transference occurs in a certain context under the different cultural backgrounds, so in some cases the faithful, literal translation is not necessarily demanded, even desired, which can be seen clearly if we follow the historical line. Editing processes, such as rewriting, domestication, reorganization and the like are necessary and rational to meet the skopos the translation is expected to achieve. What's more, translated international news is not only a translation product, but also functions independently as a news product. So it needs to embrace all the attributes of a news item in the target culture to make sure it delivers the information in an understandable and acceptable way. Also it is unavoidable that news item has to be edited because of the limited sources of raw material, the concentration of media ownership, the biased construction of news and differentiated news values. All in all, transediting should be termed as a legitimate category of translation, which should not be excluded or simply ignored. The real boundary of translation should be extended. In other words, in practice, as long as the target text meets the expectation of the translation brief, it can be regarded as a successful and functional translation.
