How to classify the parts of speech in Chinese has always been a major issue in the academic discussion. The problem has been haunting the scholars who have been engaged in the Chinese grammar all the time. The part of speech in Chinese has been a most important matter in some specific stage. Since the birth of the studies on Chinese grammar, especially since 1949, the grammarians have made the big progress. But as a result of the complexity of the studies, there are still some big differences to be discussed by the further Linguists. We have to explore the history of the studies, to analysis its development condition, to summarize the rule for further studies.This paper summarized the studies on parts of speech in modern Chinese since 1949 on the basis of collecting and analyzing the materials since 1949, especially since the 1980s. And the writer concluding the views on some characteristics of the history.The writer talks about the importance of the studies on parts of speech, the reasons why she selected the period (1949-now) to summarize and a brief review of the studies on parts of speech in Modern Chinese before 1949 in the foreword. She also divides the entire period into four sections, the popular era (1949-1966), the Low stagnation (1966-1978), the prosperous era (1978-2000) and the continuous prosperous era (2000-now). Then, she gives a review of the studies on parts of speech during each era and makes a conclusion—the history of the studies on parts of speech in Chinese is a process during which we have been discovering and approaching its nature. At last, she provides some characteristics about the studies on parts of speech in modern Chinese since 1949 and expounds the value of this papers as well as the necessary of the further study in the concluding remarks.
