This research adopts both paper tests and compositions to elicit data. The acquisition of the extensional meaning of Chinese compound directional complement is investigated by paper tests using multiple-choice questions, whose main subjects are overseas students with intermediate or advanced Chinese level in ECNU, while the acquisition of the constructional structure of Chinese compound directional complement is examined by sentence arrangement. Writing data is collected from composition exercise and exam composition of overseas students in ECNU, CIEE, SUET. The research employs theories of second language acquisition to discuss the reasons and principles of inter-language. Based on the study of students' understanding and application of the extensional use of Chinese compound directional complement, several conclusions of the acquisition of Chinese compound directional complement are achieved. Finally, the paper proposes some advices for teaching which may serve as a reference to TCFL teachers.The paper discusses following aspects in general:1.As for the meaning, what is the tendency and features in overseas students' mastery of extensional meaning of Chinese compound directional complement and their reasons.2.As for the constructional structure, what are the features of overseas students' mastery of the position of Chinese compound directional complement, and what are main types of mistakes for different structures.3.Does students' actual acquisition agree with the teaching arrangement, if not, what are causes? What inspirations can we draw from students' actual acquisition?There are six chapters in this paper. The first chapter explains the background, academic terms, research field and the value of this subject. Chapter two gives an integrated summary of current researches on Chinese compound directional complement. Chapter three introduces the research design and basic theories used in the paper. Chapter four deals with the survey and the analysis of the research result, with an investigation of categories of errors. Based on the conclusion and the theoretical analysis of the Chinese compound directional complement, chapter five proposes some suggestions on teaching compound directional complement. Lastly, some defects in this paper are mentioned and advices for future study are given in chapter six.
