The Features Of Political Writings And The Choices Of Translating Strategies

Political writing is a special kind of style, which is used in the formal and serious situations such as declaration, government document, manifesto, speech in press conference, foreign affairs and so on. With development of society and speeding up of economic globalization, the interactions and communications between countries in the world have become more and more frequent, especially in the economic and political fields. Close and frequent communications will necessarily raise some conflicts, and it is extremely obvious in political fields. Political writings play an increasingly important role in the political life of people. So we must attach great importance to the translations of political writings so that some conflicts can be avoided in their beginnings and exchanges and developments can be further promoted in economic, political, and cultural fields. The thesis begins with definition, meaning, function and stylistic feature to lay a detailed analysis on political writings and then from the angles of culture and pragmatics, it further expounds on political writings. Finally, based on the foregoing analysis, the thesis discusses the corresponding methods and strategies of translation. Viewing political writing as a special style, the thesis firstly gives a deep discussion on the definition and function of political writing and then explores its specialty from three aspects- vocabulary, grammar, and figure of speech. Culture is illustrated in the writing and writing is reflection of culture. If one wants to know political writings, culture in them is the first step. The main objects about culture of the thesis are definition of culture, culture factors and culture differences. How to use language belongs to the category of pragmatics. Presupposition and hedge are mainly pragmatic skills. According to the types and functions of presupposition and hedge, characteristics of political writings and how to apply the two skills in them are discussed. The above discussions lay a solid foundation on translation of political writings. Finally the thesis explores the methods and strategies of translation. The preparations before translation, literal translation, free translation, combination of literal translation and free translation are all general translating methods, which are also suitable for political writings. Domestication and foreignization are two strategies which focus on literal translation or free translation respectively. Influenced by the culture, the two strategies are applied very skillfully in political writings. In a word, aim of this thesis is to explore how to translate political writings and give some suggestions on translation of political writings. In the communications in political occasions, we should play the roles of political writings fully to let them serve for us so that communication outside China will be more smooth and harmonious and China will be more active in the political stages.
