Stylistic Equivalence In Literary Translation

This thesis attempts to set up stylistic equivalence, on the basis of Nida's dynamic equivalence (D-E theory), as a possible standard in literary translation. This thesis delves deep into definitions concerning style and equivalence and touches upon some specific issues concerning the dichotomy between style and content, as well as a few related distinctions.This thesis also supplements the stylistic aspect of Nida's D-E theory with the stylistic thoughts such as foregrounding and imbues stylistic adjustments, as means of stylistic compensation, into the model of stylistic equivalence, under the pre-condition that both are compatible with the major thoughts of D-E theory.This thesis establishes a model for stylistic equivalence, composed of macroscopic, microscopic, supplementary, and comparative components. Following the model, the stylistic comparison of two translations for a text is conducted. Some exemplary translations between Chinese and English are also quoted to illustrate the practical application and validity of the model based on stylistic equivalence in this thesis.The stylistic exploration of Nida's D-E theory, undertaken by this thesis, shows a possible new approach to the application of popular equivalence theory into literary criticism and practice in literary translation. More flexible applications of the model concerning stylistic equivalence are recommended at the end of this thesis.
