Background:With the vigorous development of higher nursing education, the number of male nursing students is increasing year by year. The emergence of male nursing students is to adapt to the changes of medical model and nursing development. At present, the mental health of college students and mental health education are increasing concerned,about 10%~30% of college students have various mental health problems. Psychological problems affected the college students' study and living. They have become the major causes for China's college students to leave, drop-out and suicide. As a special group of college students, the mental health of male nursing students have a direct impact on their learning, life and self-development, even related to the quality and stability of nursing in future . In recent years, studies on mental health of nursing students are rising, and most of which are survey on mental health status ,mainly confined to either female nursing students or a particular level, such as a school survey. However, comparative study of male nursing students and female nursing students on mental health, as well as study on influencing factors are still less in domestic.Therefore, the study of male nursing students' mental health and its influencing factors has great significance.Objectives:Objectives of this study is to explore the related factors which influence male nursing students'mental health and to provide a guidance for finding and preventing psychological problems earlier.Methods:221 male nursing students are cluster sampled from Jining Medical University, Taishan Medical University and Binzhou Medical University. Three instruments are administered to students for data collection. A background questionnaire is used to gather demographic information. Beck-Srivastava Stress Inventory (BSSI) is used to identify the sources and levels of stress. Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) is used to examine the levels of psychological well-being. Epidata software is used for data input, SPSS12.0 software is used for x2 test, t- test and multi-factor analysis after proofreading.Main Results:I. The result of this research shows: the main psychological problems of male nursing students are as follows, interpersonal sensitivity (18.55%) , depression(13.12%) , anxiety (8.14%) .II. Compared to the norm of national youth group, SCL-90 factors of male nursing students except acts of terror, paranoia, mental illness factor are significantiy higher (P<0.01) ; SCL-90 factors except the paranoid, psychotic factor, other factors are significantly higher than those of female's, and t-test showed that significant difference between the two (P<0.01) ; SCL-90 factors in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety factor scores are significantly higher than other professional male students in health, factor in the hostilities on male nursing students scored lower than other professions, and t-test showed that significant difference between the two (P<0.01) .III. The first ten common stressors are preparing and taking part in examinations, the traditional concept of society, interpersonal relationships, attitudes of other professionals toward my profession, the competition among classmates, the publication of examination results, the employment situation, coping with the illness and death of clients, reconsideration about proper career choice and personal habits of the pressure. IV. Male nursing students in mental health problems affected by many factors. Four factors are involved in the model finally by means of multi-factor analysis, such as students, family atmosphere, professional satisfaction, physical condition, and all these factors are risk factors.Conclusions and Suggestions:This study find that male nursing students have many psychological problems, so educators of high colleges and universities should recognize the adverse effects by the source of these pressures. Targeted measures can be taken to alleviate pressure ,improve their stress-coping strategies for psychological well-being, and to improve the psychological, social and occupational adaptability. A moderate pressure can assist the body and mind grow healthly.
