In China, written by Richthofen, a famous German geographer in 1870s, the silk trade as a medium of transport routes between China and central Asia and India from 114 B.C. to A.D.127 is called "silk road", which is accepted by scholars around the world and becomes the representative of cultural and economic communications between ancient east and west. With the development of Liao Ning silk industry and the communications with Japan, South Korea, and North Korea, many silk history scholars make researches on the silk road in North-eastern Asia connecting Korean Peninsula and Japan, which is called "Eastern Silk Road". In ancient, China communicated with Korean Peninsula and Japan on culture through this Eastern Silk Road. With historians'and silk professionals'research on Eastern Silk Road, the historical status and functions of Dandong silk are highlighted.This paper first discusses the setup and development of Eastern Silk Road based on the communications between China and Korea, and between China and Japan on silk products, and the associations between Dandong and Eastern Silk Road based on the location and geographical features of Dandong. Then it illustrates the development of Dandong silk industry and its historical status and functions in the development of Eastern Silk Road. Finally, this paper describes the prospects for the functions of Dandong silk in the new era.
