In Chinese painting history , Wei Jin Nan Bei dynasty is the period of art's "consciousness" , but the art's situation of that period can only be found in the historical records for a long time , and it's difficult to see the corresponding images. Since the 20th century 50 years', many tomb murals inWei Jin Nan Bei dynasty had been explored, they made our impression of that period gradually clear. Xu Xianxiu tomb excavated in 2002, it's preserved completely, depicted beautifully, this tomb murals is so unique that once again aroused widespread concern in tomb murals of that period. In this paper, I regard Xu Xianxiu tomb murals as the study object, use "iconology" method of art history, combine the style , era of art, culture, society together, to analyze and explore he art language and cultural content of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals comprehensively, systematically and deeply. By researching the intertextual relations of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals to reach the understanding of the both. This paper is divided into five parts, they are summary, chapter I, chapter II,Chapter III and the conclusion, of which the third chapter is the stress of discussion. In summary I intend to illustrate the purpose, significance, the current insufficient research of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals, as well as iconology method this paper used. Iconology is an important research method in Western art history in 20th century, it integrates artistic style, art sociology, and art culture, so it is very appropriate for the study of Xu Xianxiu tomb paintings which reveal the age, cultural, and social connotations. In the first chapter I describe Xu Xianxiu tomb murals' excavation and the status preserved. The tomb had been stolen, after two years work of mining, in 2002, cleared out 326 square meters' painted murals, they distribute in the ramp, corridor, the tomb room, the through holes and patio. As the erosion of time and climate, added the destruction of grave robbers, Xu Xianxiu tomb mural was damaged in some areas, but relatively speaking, it's preserved situation is the most complete in the Dong Wei Bei Qi dynasty's tomb murals that had been excavated so far, 326 square meters of murals in the area is also the largest. But the research of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals is not sufficient at present. Therefore, Xu Xianxiu tomb murals have a higher value of the image data and strong necessary of academic research. In chapter II I examine the time's atmosphere of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals, that is Wei Jin Nan Bei dynasty which is an art's "consciousness" era, the constituted factors include, the rise of metaphysics and Buddhism; changes ofartistic themes and expression; results of painting theories . The interaction of Multi-ethnic and multi-cultural made the people's thinking and action, literature and art show a unique look in Wei Jin Nan Bei dynasty. In chapter III I officially entered the microscopic analysis on Xu Xianxiu tomb murals, this chapter is written according to the iconology method, I combine the significance with the image (the image contains the age, social and cultural connotations), regard the form factors including the composition, shape, line and color, the overall style as the starting point, analyze these complex and diverse art forms linking to the cultural factors, through the analysis of Xu Xianxiu tomb paintings which is the art style of the individual, try to glimpse the spiritual and cultural character of Wei Jin Nan Bei dynasty, to find a link connecting the Han and Tang art, I thought, this is just the meaning and value of the image. In the final concluding section I summarize the whole paper's contents. In the course of the full text of the paper, I try to make rational reasoning, perceptual capture, clear arrangement, deeply argument. In particular, on the issue of the "simple and beautiful" style of Xu Xianxiu tomb murals, in the academic world, there are two opposing views, there are more positive attitude, but also have the negative view because the murals was unfinished. After reading on the historical and murals itself, I reach a more objective conclusion that Xu Xianxiu tomb murals are indeed "simple and beautiful" style, but because of its "no intention to succeed", it is a "unintentional achievements ",and also can not represent the highest level of the " simple and beautiful "style. But as a rare raw data that can reflect the "simple and beautiful" style, Xu Xianxiu tomb mural is of high value, and I think that this is also a historical force.
