Modern Chinese Dictionary (MCD for short) is the most authoritative one of all the reference books for modern Chinese, because it is normative, compiled with theoretical views, and keeps pace with the times. It was more than forty years since the planning of the first edition to the publication of the fifth edition. There is a change in the meanings of many words, which have also been reflected in the use of annotation in brackets. By comparing the usage of the annotation in brackets in the old and new editions, summarizing and describing the changes in different categories, I try to make a further discovery of the reasons of such changes and the changes reflected in meaning, grammar, and usage of the annotated words. I want to find the practical rules about the use of annotation in brackets and the best way to use it, in order to offer some useful opinions and advice to make the lexicographer of the MCD and similar dictionaries more scientific and perfect.I studied the first and the fifth editions of MCD, and make an analysis and description of changes in the annotation of verbs in brackets. The main content of this thesis is as follows:Chapter One begins with explanation of the reasons why I choose this topic and the significance of this choice. This chapter gives a summery of the current academic study of this topic, and gives a simple explanation of the object of study, research methods and steps.Chapter Two introduces the relevant theories about annotation in brackets in DMC and summarizes four points of view including"implicit content","qualifier","super-meaning component"and"meaning analysis theory". They provide a theoretical support for the study of annotation in brackets in MCD.Chapter Three and chapter Four analyze the addition and deletion of the annotation of verbs in brackets in the new edition of MCD. According to the position of the annotation in brackets, the annotation in brackets can be classified into three categories: before annotation, in annotation, and after annotation. There is a specific classified description of the addition and deletion of the annotation of verbs in brackets. The study of the actual use of the verbs and the further verification by corpus help to analyze whether this change is reasonable. In addition, there is a study of the addition and deletion in the examples of the annotation in brackets.Chapter Five gives a specific analysis of changes of the content of the annotation of verbs in brackets. it studies mainly from two aspects: the mutual transformation of the annotation in brackets and the annotated subject, and the changes of the content of the annotation in brackets. Sand there in a specific analysis of the rationality of the changes with the actual situation in the use of corpus.
