The purpose of this study is to explore the impact on the development of high school students'self-concept by means of group counseling. In the first part an investigation is performed on the current status of the students'self-concept in a key senior high school, in which 153 students who were randomly chosen in Grade 11 of No. 2 Middle School of Hailar were tested with Tennessee Self-Concept Scale to find out the basic status of high school students'self-concept and the factors which can affect them. The second part focuses on the intervention by group counseling. Based on the original pre-test, a teaching class of 49 students was randomly chosen as the experimental group. They received group counseling for two months, which was carried out according to the activity plan of group counseling. Through the analysis of the data from both pre-test and post-test, conclusions are drawn as follows:1. The students'self-concept level in key senior middle schools is positive in general.2. The total self-concept levels of boys are generally higher than those of girls except in ID, ME and FA. There exist significant differences in SA and PH.3. There are significant differences in ID, PER and B between students of arts and students of science. The former are lower in all levels than the latter except in SC.4. There are no significant differences in the aspects of self-concept between students belonging to one-child family and those having brothers or sisters in the family. However, the former are higher in all levels than the latter except in SO and SC.5. Group counseling has a significant effect on the promotion of the development of students'self-concept.
