The study on self-concept is always involved among psychologists. According to manydomestic and overseas researches, it shows that self concept is the foundation of healthypersonalities and important indicators of mental health. Because junior middle schoolstudents are in adolescence, their development of mind and bodies is great imbalance, theirself-awareness is not perfect and their self-concept is developing. So, at this stage whetherthey can build up a positive self-concept concerns their physical and mental development andgrowth in the future. So, it is necessary to discuss how to improve the level of self-concept ofjunior middle school students and how to improve their psychological health level andcomprehensive development.The purpose of the survey is to study the effect of growth group counseling on the senseof self-concept of junior middle school students, and to explore effective methods to improvethe level of the sense of self-concept of junior middle school students.First, in the study, the author had questionnaire survey and analysis on the situation ofself-concept of junior school students. Based on the above survey, utilizing the method ofgroup counseling, the author conducted a8-phase growth group intervene to experimentalgroups. And through analying its effect, the author hoped it would produce inspiration for thefurther study and provided some reference for iental health education on self-concet of juniorschool students.The study had two seperate parts. In the first part, the researcher randomly selected twoparallel classes of first-year junior school, with totally72. Through drawing lots, the class Awas decided as the experimental group, and class B as the controlled group. Then the wholestudents were tested with questionnaire survey by urilizing TSCS, and the author obtainedand analyzed respective pre-test data of two classes.In the second part, the decided experimental group would took part in8-time growthgroup counseling intervene, but the controlled group was in natural scene. The conselingactivity was onr time per week and from one hour to one and half hour per time. After a weekfor the whole group conseling activity, the post-test on TSCS was sarted for the whole testedstudents. Then to collect data was to utilize semi-structured interview for follow-up evaluating conselling effect of experimental group, after one month for the conselling activity.Through comparing to the pre-test and post-test and interview report, the intervene effect ofgroup conselling for self-concept of junior school students was reviewed.Results of the study indicate that:1. The students’ self-concept level in middle schools is positive in general.2. There issignificant differences in the aspects of self-concept between girls and boys on SC.3.Thereare no significant differences in the aspects of self-concept between students belonging toone-child family and those having brothers or sisters in the family.4.There are significantdifferences in the aspects of self-concept on FA,ID and TOT between the student cadre andother students.5there were significant differences on SC, PER, ME of the junior middleschool students in different grades.The growth group counseling scheme designed in this study is a set of available andeffective plan for students’ self-concept level improvement of the junior middle schoolstudents, which can be promoted and applied in mental health education of schools afterfurther correcting and refining.
