A case study in Shunyi in Beijing was conducted to explore the characteristics of suburban land use. Driving force and ecological service value of land use were discussed through comprehensive historical analyses. In recent years, the function of suburb agriculture has tended to more and more multiple. To this problem, the trend and pattern choice of suburban land use were analyzed as well. The results showed as follows.Great change of suburban land took place in Beijing in recent decade. For instance, arable land has decreased by 16.7 thousand hectares at a speed of 3% annually in recent years. Structure of land use has changed basically. Arable land, garden land, forest land and land for public transportation accounted for from 57.4%, 3.1%, 2.8% and 16.9% respectively in 1993 to 39%, 7%, 8.3% and 22.3% respectively now. These changes indicate that ecological service function of suburban land takes on a rising trend and becomes basic characteristics of suburban land variation in this period.Orchard and vegetable land increased fast while land for grain crops' land decreases greatly, which strengthens the characteristics of suburban land use. Land increased by 17% for orchard and 22% for vegetable annually since 1993. Grain crops land decreased by 27.3 thousand hectares at a speed of 6% annually.Driving forces differ in different periods, but income per capita, proportion of non-farmers, value of tertiary line, industrial value and cropping value are major driving factors in all periods. These driving factors influence reciprocally land use change, play a vital role in structural change of land use to promote land use transfer towards suburban multifunction. To explore the choices of land use in the future, the structure of land use was projected in terms of economical, ecological and win-win pattern that based on analysis of land use. Land use in Shunyi is in transition from economical to win-win pattern, which will be the dominant pattern of land utilization in the region from now to 2010.
