One failure in the production equipment may lead to disability of the equipment, even shutdown of the whole assembly line, causing great loss. To guarantee continuity of production, most companies tend to keep spare parts inventory far more than that is actually needed. On the other hand, inventory management groups usually focus their attention on production part inventories which are more directly related to production and profits, and spare parts- sometimes termed the "hidden inventory"-continue to be ignored. In fact, inventory of spare parts often accounts for a considerable fraction of a company's total inventory. The optimization of spare parts inventory will lower a company's cost significantly, hence sharpen it's competitive ability. One solution to this problem is employing modern inventory theory to optimize the inventory and replenishment of spare parts. A spare parts inventory decision support system based on information technology is also helpful. The dissertation firstly summarizes the characters of spare parts inventory management, and the different points compared with WIP inventory and production inventory. To offer aid for decision on spare parts inventory controlling, this paper studies spare parts inventory decision support system and adapts Object-Oriented approach to design model base systems, the core of spare parts inventory decision support system, then gives solutions to model classes definition, data organization, model synthesis and inheritance mechanism. Furthermore, an artificial neural networks models is designed for classification of spare parts. Another involved inventory model classes demand for spare parts into critical and non-critical demand, and presents a new policy where some of the stock was reserved for critical demand. The last chapter concludes this dissertation and presents the further study.
