Owing to the different space-time of diverse areas development, there exist variouskinds of sections similar to Urban Agglomeration, with disparate level and arrangement in thelarge geographical space of our country, and they are often repeated and crossed inconnotation or extension when defined, which causes divarication when using the samenotion, or confusion between alike ones, especially between Urban Agglomeration and CitiesGroup. Referring to research content, the advanced stage of Urban Agglomeration was takenmore care of, but contrary to the primary and intermediate stage. Meanwhile, under themacroscopical background of revitalizing the old industrial base, as the main carrier of which,the cities group should adjust its construction and optimize its function. Therefore, on thebasis of defining the concept of Cities Group, this dissertation probes into the functionoptimization of Cities Group in the central part of Jilin province by applying theories andmethods in relevant subjects, such as urban geography, economic geography, regionaleconomics, ecology and so on. The dissertation can be divided into three parts: prologue, main body and summarization,thereinto, the main body consists of four chapters. Chapter One begins with the concept ofCities Group. This part defines and analyses several relational conceptions, including UrbanAgglomeration, City-and-town Concentrated Areas, Metropolitan Area, MetropolitanInterlocking Region, Megalopolis, Urban Belt. At the same time, this part nails down therange of Cities Group in the central part of Jilin province. Chapter Two summarizes current research direction and research value of this text bycombing to domestic and international relevant research. Besides, on base of two majortheory plates about Cities Group, which are theory of development and evolvement, and theone of urban integration, this part expound relevant theories to offer theoretical foundationand support for the whole dissertation. Chapter Three launches on the forming and development of Cities Group in the centralpart of Jilin province, analyzing the current contact and the strengths, weaknesses,opportunities and threats for its further development . This chapter points out the course offorming and development of Cities Group in the central part of Jilin can be divided into fourstages, which exists deep historical origin with the construction of the old industrial base inJilin, simultaneity, the system and policy of the country have played a very important roleduring the course; in the interior of Cities Group, the balance degree is degressive year byyear, locational coefficient and the city flows are obvious in different district, and functionintegration is not evident. This part also indicates the relationship between functionunconformable of Cities Group and decay of the old industrial base in Jilin. Grounded on the preceding paragraphs and the necessity of optimizing the function ofCity Group, and guided by the principle of maximizing favorable factors and minimizeunfavorable ones, the last chapter probes into the approaches and coordination frame forfunction integration in middle-Jilin Cities Group, among which the model of integration, thetype of relation and organization constituting are dissertated emphatically.
