| Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, displaying, querying, analyzing and assistant decision-marking on geographical data.lt has made surprising development in the lastest 30 years. GIS has been widely used in areas such as resource probe, environment, traffic safety and public facility, etc.As one of the five major forest regions of our country, the Northeast Forest Region occupies the important position in the forestry. With the development of the reform and opening-up, the country puts forward the goal of building the ecological forestry, and the management philosophy of the forestry transfers to this goal.In the past, we just pay attention to the timber production in the Northeast Forest Region. Now, because of the new forestry policy, we should not only produce the timber, but also attach importance to the ecological benefits. It is an urgent problem at present that how to make the workers' life well in the forest while protecting forest reserves.On the basis of GIS, this paper probes into the GIS application in the social and economic development of the Northeast Forest Region. Firstly, the rudimentary knowledge of GIS, data structures, datum gathering, data analysis and data output are introduced. Secondly, in this condition, using the theory of regional economics, the author designs the theoretic framework of GIS that uses in the social and economic development of the Northeast Forest Region. Meanwhile, the author makes an introduction about how to include the data into the system that is set up. Thirdly, the paper describes how to utilize the existing database system to do inquiring and analyzing. In order to explain further, the author takes the Heilongjiang Province for example to study the application of GIS in the social and economic development of the Northeast Forest Region. Finally, according to the research and analysis mentioned above, the author makes some conclusions and suggestions.
