In the new century in which competitive strength mainly comes from knowledge and innovation, focus of competitiveness among companies moves from market, capital and management to human resources. More evidence shows, company job training plays a much more important role than ever before in the development of companies. However, company job training is still at the initial stage in China. Although many companies in China have begun to realize value of job training, they are puzzled about how to develop an appropriate solution—systematic, scientific and effective management model to resolve the problems in job training like training needs analysis, training effectiveness evaluation, training risk control and so on. Therefore, it is extraordinarily important to study and develop an operable management model for company job training. Based on the theory of training the total organization developed by Vernon Humphtey, this article studies current status and problems of job training in company A, which is a filiale of a multi-national corporation. Appropriate solutions are put forward accordingly. Firstly, it's important to manage job training from the perspective of the total organization. Only when taking all organizational factors into account, can job training contribute to achieving the strategic objectives. Secondly, it's necessary to build up linkage between various sub-systems of job training including training needs analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Consequently, the article develops a new management model for company job training based on lifecycle theory, and provides detailed description of competency-based training needs analysis, training effectiveness evaluation and training risk control.
