Since 1990s, the study of Northeast Asia security cooperation has been one focus of the international relation study for many years. A lot of scholars have been studying this issue from different perspectives, gaining a lot of profound and perceptive research achievements. Based on the other scholars' work and their achievements, the thesis will try to analyze the transition and characteristics as well as the formation of dilemma of Northeast Asian security cooperation from the perspective of nationalism. After the Cold War, the development of Northeast Asia security cooperation has been lagged, with the diversionary internal structure among the nation-states, the inconsistent standpoint of policy-making, the absence of mutual conception and the tension of arms race as its typical characteristics, which brings on a more and more sensitive and brittle situation of regional security. At the same time, nationalism has been a new trend all over the world, including Northeast Asia. Nationalism, the core of which is the national interest, is bound to have an important influence with Northeast Asia security cooperation. Then, how to analyze Northeast Asian security cooperation from the perspective of nationalism? It is a worthwhile research subject for the time being. Therefore the thesis concentrates on the rise of nationalism in Northeast Asia after the Cold War and its influence on contemporary Northeast Asian security cooperation. First, from a view of nationalism, a comparative study of Chinese nationalism, Japanese nationalism and Korean nationalism will be done, on the base of which the crux of Northeast Asian security cooperation will be explained by the influence exerted by nationalism on the definition of national interests and the making-up of diplomatic policy. And with the development of nationalism in Northeast Asia, it can be predicted that the dilemma of Northeast Asia security cooperation will be sustaining for some time in the future. The thesis will be divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainly poses the subject of this thesis and its value both in theory and in practice, presents the current academic situation of the research and finally makes clear the whole writing arrangement and framework. The second part mainly discusses the typical modality and the causes of formation of Northeast Asia security cooperation dilemma, which provides necessary base and preparation for the following text. The third part mainly focuses on the rise of the nationalism in Northeast Asia after the Cold War. Firstly, the concept and characteristics of nationalism will be made clear. And then, this part explores the causes, the indications, intrinsic quality and the development of Chinese nationalism, Japanese nationalism and Korean nationalism. On this foundation the rising influence of nationalism in national decision-making process and in the Northeast Asian cooperation will be analyzed. The forth part mainly analyzes the influence of nationalism in Northeast Asia on the Northeast Asian security cooperation. It is the core of the whole thesis. Based on the discussion of the third part, this part first discusses the way and result of nationalism influence on the Northeast Asian security cooperation dilemma, and then overviews the forecast of the Northeast Asia security cooperation based on the abstraction and summarization of opinions on regional cooperation from nationalism of different kind, which brings a negative effect to some fundamental problems such as regional identity and regional construction.Based on the discussion above and an angle of theoretical abstraction, the conclusion part clearly reiterates the major arguments on the rise of nationalism in Northeast Asia after the Cold War and its influence on Northeast Asian security cooperation dilemma.
