In the high-tech local wars, air attack and air defense have throughout influenced and determined the course of the war. Effective air defense had become the basic premise in completing operational tasks successful for Army. Geographical terrain and its corresponding properties are very prominent for air defense command and decision due to the army frequent tact. The Field Air Defense System that commonly used can display information on air situation and provide decision support, but it can not display properties related to the geographical and topographical features. GIS used in air defense system can provide the geographical attribute information in battlefield environment and powerful spatial analysis functions for commanders. In this paper, we firstly summarized the application of GIS. Then, the possible roles of GIS in the field air defense system were investigated in detail based on the analysis of characteristics of air defense, military field operations, and training needs. The basic framework and function modules of the air defense early-warning system were proposed based on the actual needs of the military air defense. Finally, some functions of the system were designed in detail and realized through a tentative development, including the real-time early-warning of dynamic air situation, the configuration of air defense, allocation of fire on air targets, and analysis of military terrain. The air defense early-warning system based on GIS realizes the visualization of battlefield information through combination the geospatial and air defense weapons data. The three level early-warning ring can give warning prompt and dynamic monitoring based on the important security objectives or regions when enemy air attack of weapons fly into the specific early-warning ring. Thus, it makes data analysis and display of results more intuitive, could improve the operational effectiveness of the field air defense in future military war, and promote the development of the military battlefield information.
