Another new round of curriculum reforms of Senior High School Mathematics has begun in Jiangsu Province since the Autumn of 2005. This round of curriculum reforms involves more actions, which has raised new Senior High School Mathematics teaching ideas and has set a new curriculum standard as well as a new syllabus of Senior High School Mathematics. Also new teaching materials have been made up in order to help the citizens-to-be meet the needs for their own personal and social developments with the improvement of students'Mathematical accomplishments, which is based on the Mathematical achievements of the nine-year compulsory education. In the new Mathematics curriculum, specially focused on are the students'acquisition of basic knowledge and skills (including the processes and results), application and experience of mathematical thinking and methods, self-study and exploration and cooperation, formation and development of their emotions, attitudes and values. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the inquiry-based teaching method to the classroom activities. The Concept of Functions and the Basic Elementary Functionsâ… belong to Chapter 2 of Senior High School Mathematics, which is important for students'later learning processes. To draw students'interest to studies and improve their abilities of applying function thinking to solve problems, the inquiry-based teaching method is imperative.The procedures of this thesis are as follows: Firstly, a general development of the inquiry-based teaching method is introduced by learning consulting materials.Then, the current situation of inquiry-based teaching method of functions in Senior High School is discussed based on the surveys among students and teachers.Subsequently, a main research is implemented on models, strategies and principles by combining the theories of the inquiry-based teaching method and by learning from others. During the researching process, the inquiry-based teaching method is tested in an experimental class .At the same time,the traditional teaching method is implemented in another class. The achievements of the students from the two different classes are analyzed and compared to evaluate the effects of the inquiry-based teaching method. The summarizing reflection is also conducted.Through the research on the inquiry-based teaching method of functions and the analysis of the teaching cases, the operability and effectiveness of the inquiry-based teaching method of functions is proved. The achievements of this thesis can provide theoretical bases for the application of the inquiry-based teaching method of functions in Senior High School. It also can support the view that the inquiry-based teaching method of functions can improve students'achievements in their studies.
