In the course of China's music education transformation, reform of high school curriculum design and textbook is a core issue--an effort to build the foundation for the basic school music education. From 2004 onwards, several different textbooks, developed according to General High School Music Course Specifications (Experimental), were used by high schools nationwide. By offering more choices to music teachers, they together made a meaningful breakthrough in China's high school music textbook development. What more should we concern is that due to an relatively late of our high school music education itself, hence the construction of its textbook should be perfected further more. Through effective research of the application of the high school music textbook, the reform of our country's high school music course could be further promoted, and even on the basis of educational reforms in China have a profound and positive impact.This master degree thesis chooses the textbook published by Hunan Art Press. Survey was conducted at several schools in the Nanjing area to understand its utilization and effectiveness. Data was then carefully evaluated. The paper concludes by offering some suggestions on how to improve the textbook(s). During this research project, documentary study, survey and analytical methodology were applied, so as to provide a convincing perspective to driving China's high school music textbook reform in the right direction.This paper consists of four chapters. (1) Prelude:explaining the background, implications and methods of this research project. (2) Subject analysis of Hunan-published music textbook:focusing on its totality, unit subjects, contents, and framework. (3) Site survey and assessment:describing the survey process, statistical analysis and characterization that reflect the textbook quality and effectiveness. (4) Recommendations:based on the survey and analysis, and in line with the fundamental principles of music textbook development as well as the prevailing trend of music education reform, providing suggestions to the future improvement of high school music textbooks.
