Literary works with animal as subject is one of the brightest stars in the history of world literature. There are a large number of these works in different civilizations in the world. Animal figures, such as ospreys and swallows in《The Book of Songs》,running tortoise and hare in《Aesop's Fables》, appeared in literary works even from the beginning of literature creation. This kind of works then emerged one after another in the history of literature and became one of the most favorite subjects of writers. Literary works with animal as subject reflect the voices and themes of the given times, embody the knowledge, wisdom and thoughts devoted by those intellectuals, and demonstrate the strength of human civilization. Therefore, this kind of works boasts abundant human resources and has both extensive and deep cultural, social and educational importance.The current research is a comprehensive study of the teaching of literary works with animal as subject in middle and primary schools in China. It first investigates the compiling and content features of these works in Chinese textbooks of middle and primary schools. In terms of compiling arrangement, literary works with animal as subject take up a large proportion of the whole textbook, cover a wide range of topics and display diversified styles. With respect to content, these works can be divided into three categories, each focusing on lecturing, knowledge and moral values respectively. Then, this paper conducts a general analysis of the current situation of the teaching of literary works with animal as subject and finds that there is much room to be improved in the light of adjustment and integration of teaching according to different styles of these works. It is suggested that teachers should enhance the integral use of the textbook and develop a diversified teaching mode. Based on the above analysis, this paper puts forward several teaching strategies of literary works with animal as subject and points out that teaching of this kind of works should be conducted from the perspective of aesthetic education, education for sustainable development and life education. It also presents several teaching principles corresponding to the three teaching strategies respectively.The focus of the present paper is to make research into the teaching strategy of literary works with animal as subject. It aims to improve students'aesthetic awareness and ability, cultivate in them the ethic concept of the harmonious existence of human and nature, and arouse their respect and love for life. It is hoped that the current research can shed some light into the teaching of literary works with animal as subject, provide practical guidance to the improvement of teachers' teaching mode as well as their integral use of textbooks, and instill new momentum to student's personal development and the teaching of the Chinese language.
