The issues of equality of higher education matriculation opportunities has been playing an extremely important role on China's education and building of harmonious society. Xinjiang is one of China's multi-ethnic areas; study on the historical development and status of equality of higher education matriculation opportunities can provide a reference for the development of higher education of Xinjiang in future. It is very important and necessary for realization of equal rights of education, and building a harmonious society.This articles analyze domestic and foreign literature that related to the education equity and education opportunities problem. First, the study analyzes equal higher education opportunities in history. Higher Education occurred in Xinjiang in the early 20th century, and developed slowly before founding of the nation, opportunities for higher education increase slowly. After the founding of the nation to 1970's, there are ups and downs in the development of higher education in Xinjiang. From the end of 1970's to today, the higher education in Xinjiang developed rapidly, higher education opportunities enrollment expanded and made great achievements. Secondly, a detailed case study on the status of equal hither education opportunities in Xinjiang is done, mainly focusing on four aspects: student's gender, nationality, family background, and the place they are from.Through data analysis, the study yielded the following results: higher education opportunities in Xinjiang had increased steadily in the reform and opening up of 30 years; at this stage, higher education opportunities is not equal in different social strata and different area, not only in the opportunities to higher education, but also reflected by choosing different types of colleges. This paper analyzes the cause of higher education unequal opportunities that including formulation of education policy, economic development gap between northern and southern in Xinjiang, the culture of different ethnic and family aspects. Finally, based on the actual situation, the present study gained some insights on how to promote the higher education equal opportunities in Xinjiang, and information for education decision making on macro-level is also provided.
