Abstract This paper studys the apprenticeship system of fine arts education to be infonned of the long history of fine arts education since ancient times. In China, the reforming experi- ment of fine arts education in modern sense was mainly borrowed from the West and the beginning is rather late and the period is rather short. Existing studies on this subject are very limited. For many reasons , no study makes a deep historical study on the appreatice- ship system of fine arts educaiion. Such a phenomenon is surely a vacuum area in fine arts education study and teaching methodology study. The intnxluction gives an explanation of the significance and the goal of this paper in light of school education and competence education, and introduces the backgrounds and conditon of present study, and indicates some problems and gives a principal line and method of this paper. The first part makes a historical study of the apprenticeship in each dynasty of China and sums up the characteristics and apprenticeship relationship between each dynasty?s fine arts. Thus, the paper gives a clear line of development of the appreaiiceship system of fine arts education. The 2nd part studys the characteristics of the apprenticeship system of fine arts edu- cation. 搆in ?is ?teacher,?as a particular model of fine arts education, existed common- ly , and formed the main reason for the formation and development of the fine arts schools of China. Owing to the inheriting and reforming activities, fine arts changed with the time, which also influenced the content and development of the apprenticeship education. As for the inheritance, There were?study from as many teachers as possible? 搒tudy the strong points and discard the weak points?,and 搒tudy the spirit, not the skills? Thus 揵eing flexible to be creative?embodies the principles and characteristics of apprenticeship sys- tern. The third part studies the content and methods of the apprenticeship system of crafts- man arts and of scholar arts and indicates in detail the differences between the two kinds of arts. The 4th part studies the practicallty in reality and the merits of the apprenticeship system of fine arts education through modern physiology, psychology and pedagogy. It makes clear the unique value of the apprenticeship system of fine arts education and its inspiration on contemporary fine arts education.. The final part studys objectively the unavoidable historical linutation and the inevita- ble practicality of the apprenticeship system of fine arts education. It indicates that this system has complementary probabilities for the schools or collages with class education as its main method. In the conclusion, the paper proposes a suggestion of setting up a fine ar- ts education system with chinese characteristics.
