"Master" is not a strange word to us, but for many reasons, "masters" just like morning stars rarely appear before us. To all the teachers of Chinese language, they usually appear in our dreams, in professional publications, then slowly they will become the objects of worship.To meet the demand of Chinese language education reform, the ages call for "masters" , the Chinese language education itself and the main body of the language learning, the students, call for "masters" . Therefore, this paper will redefine the word "master" . It intends to discuss the quality of the language masters of the new century from the following four aspects: "seeking knowledge" , "teaching" , "doing scholarly research" and "conducting oneself" aiming at lowering the "high standards" of being "masters" and encouraging all language teachers to become "masters" . Knowledge is stairs on which mankind can progress, it is also a walking stick helping "masters" in Chinese language teaching advance. The language "masters" of the new century not only know the importance of accumulating knowledge, but also, they should pay more attention to combine their extensive knowledge with their deep professional knowledge; They should keep on renewing their knowledge and optimizing the structure of their knowledge.Success in practical teaching is the fundamental condition of being a master. Special teaching ideas, 'teaching methods and teaching skills give every master different teaching personality, while different "teaching personality" makes every language master unique.Masters' abilities to do research work and their teachingreform can supplement each other and bring out the best in each other. The stronger their abilities, the wider their teaching reform roads.; The reason why masters become "masters" is that their personalities are attractive. Their personalities can function more than their knowledge and abilities. The education in the new century demands students to learn how to conduct themselves and how to live in the world, therefor, masters can set examples for the students with their magic personality power.Although, we have discussed the required qualities of"masters" from the above four aspects, it is still difficult for language teachers to become "masters" without harmonious exterior environment. This paper finally expounds the exterior conditions on which language teachers can become "masters" , they are "the source of teachers", " the training of teachers" , "the continuing education" and "the view on reputation" .
