English is a bridge to the world. 2,2700,0000 primary and middle school students are the hope of China, and they are future builders of China. There are more students studying English in primary and middle school than others in China.Students get different marks because of their character, self-confidence, motivation, interests, the habit and foundation of studying and what their parents are taught. Some students can do better in their study and so they can get good achievements while others begin to learn English with curiousness at first , gradually feel difficult, and then they dislike it and give it up in the end.There are many students in our school who are not good at English. Learning and teaching can't give much help to the developing China today.According to the aims, subjects and methods of questionnaire, I made an investigation in Senior One students in our school in order to help those who are not good at English. The questionnaire covers many aspects in listening, speaking, reading and writing such as words, pronunciation, grammar, syntax and some influences from surrounding, character, studying habit and skills. The total are 330. The questionnaire shows that there are 55% students who have problems in studying English.English studying has skills and methods. If students try to master them,they must learn them by practice. And then the skills and methods can help them to study English better. We are sure that all the students can do better in English if teachers have the sense of responsibility and are strict with them and give them some suggestions on learning.After this questionnaire, I read all the papers carefully. Then I try to give some advice and solutions in how to deal with the problems according to the psychologic and pedagogic theories and some of my teaching experiences.In listening I pay much attention to let students have good habit of listening. From listening to words, sentences and short paragraphs, I help them to do better and better, first easily and then difficultly. They benefit much from my exercises and hope to listen to more. In speaking I choose materials carefully and let them to act out the materials. They experience something just like their daily life. I ask them to use language to express themselves of what they do and what they think in life. In reading I give them more to .read, let them read within a limited time or have fast reading. I also tell them something on how to read. I teach the text carefully and thoroughly to let students know more about how to read fast and skillfully. In writing I first let them write more, show them some kinds of writing in or out of class and then tell them some methods and skills about how to write.By the explanations and practice to the students step by step, their problems are solved one by one. Some students begin to show interest in English again. Many students who were not good at English in the past are now full of confidence again. I grasp this firmly: let students learn English by using; let students understand and overcome their difficulties by using. What I do like this shows the important aim of studying English: studying is for using.What I do in my teaching helps the students to learn English well and gives them much confidence to face and believe themselves. It is helpful for them to study other subjects better, too.
