Higher vocational education (abbreviated as HVE) is a special type of higher education. Its educational modes in the past, to some extent, took after the higher engineering education and ordinary normal education, therefore, it lacked uniqueness. In the 21st century-an era of great leaps and changes in the human history, a new global market economy, on the basis of knowledge and information and characteristic of both competition and co-operation, is taking form, as science and technology nowadays are developing fast and knowledge economy is coming into existence, all of which may well be a great challenge to the developments of China's economy and education. Hence, higher vocational education whose goal is to cultivate laborers' qualities is becoming more and more important. To face up to such challenge, an overall reform has been carried on in HVE, which requires all HVE teachers to have better qualities. As HVE's main aim is to train students to be qualified teachers in the field of vocational education, it also meets challenge; the question is whether it can make really qualified "Shuangshi Type" teachers for the new century. But challenge may also be a good opportunity for HVE to develop itself.By informing of the research on the educational modes of HVE, the background and significance of the research, the author lays much emphasis on the importance of making the research. In the thesis, analyses are made of the major problems in the modes of teaching and curriculum of HVE, misunderstanding of certain issues is clarified at the same time, and the goals set for HVE and standards required of the trainees-future HVE professionals are also discussed, all of which may well lay a theoretical foundation for new educational modes of HVE in the 21st century. The author introduces some new educational thoughts and theories while studying the law of higher vocational education with the aim of trying to establish a "quality-centered" teaching mode-"versatility, solid foundation and capability" and a new mode of curriculum-"integrated chip of components", so that HVE can set out on a normal and smooth track for better development.
