Modernity presents a kind of modern rational spirit whose origin was Western Renaissance. Western modernity was borrowed to China in the last half of 19th century, but it was during the May 4th New Cultural Movement that western modernity developed greatly in China.Modernity of education embodies a kind of reflective and critic value system which takes scientific spirit and democratic spirit of as its basic connotations, and takes individual subjectivity as its core. China stepped into the modernity of education in the May 4th New Cultural Movement, and established three modernity essentials of education: scientificity, democracy, individual subjectivity, but during one century of the history of "saving the nation from extinction overwhelming enlightenment", the process of China' modernization of education waved up and down, and the growth of its modernity of education tumbled forward difficultly.During the new enlightenment of 1980s, the reform and practice of our education made great progress, however, such development brought about so many problems as the prevalence of the scientism and weakening of humanistic spirit caused by pursuit of educational modernity, the intensity of inequality during the pursuit of equality, the disrespect to the students' subjectivity, the upgrade of the education for exam in the back of quality education, our education growing in the aperture between the economy development and politic stabilization, etc.. There are two reasons about it. One is that our education has been insufficient in groundwork of development thoughts for a long time, the other is that one hundred's modernization of education did not cultivate a kind of soil where our modernity elements of education can develop healthily. Until now, our education has not solved these problems well.So, when the modernity essentials of education in contemporary China is studied, it is necessary to shift the viewpoint to the new one, development education, to unite with contemporary background of development,.
